Men-Speak to Me!

Off the back of my last post which you can read here, I've heard from a few guys that they've been uncomfortable with a sexist culture against women in their workplace. Maybe you've been invited to join in, maybe you've felt powerless in the face of bosses who expect all males to treat women in a disrespectful way. I want to hear from you.
I am currently writing an article on how a sexist culture affects men in the workplace. If you've a story get in touch.

Email me at gillianamartin(AT)hotmail(DOT)com.  I won't use anyone's real name or mention any details you are not comfortable with- I just want a flavour for general feeling on this area which i think is overlooked when sexism in the workplace is being discussed.

And please pass the link on to your male friends. Thanks!

Gillian,

An very interesting debate at the moment.

What are you writing it for? Is it for your blog?

Regards

Andy

Hoping to get it commissioned by newspaper or magazine. Working on submissions now.

Argh... so you're a journalist? Fantastic.

Yes it's somewhat a tricky subject. I'd never seen that Richard Keys comment to Jamie Redknapp. I think they both got what they deserved.

The last two offices that I worked in, I will say confidently that most of the smutty remarks and bad language came from the women...If I ever came out with half the bile that I heard, they would land on me like a sumo wrestler...Saw that a few times...

My favourite "sexism" story, was me on a train, going to someone's stag doo... all the old boys were doing the usual to the groom, "I don't know why you are getting married, they just give you misery, ball and chain (blah blah)"..

I stood up and said "I love my wife, and she's an inspiration to me, I think she's fantastic".

"shut up you poof" was the answer. no, I don't understand that logic either.

Chas, Of course this is also the case. I want to focus on this particular aspect though-how difficult it can be for a decent bloke to cope in a sexist environment, not when he is the object of it but he is witness to it. When he is expected to take part.

Misssy...Point taken...It all depends on the personality and the work dynamic I guess...It's one of those areas that doesn't sit well with me...you partake, you are deemed sexist...you don't, you are a prude...It did my head in at ACC sometimes...lol

About 80% of the folks I work with are women. You'd try the sexist stuff approximately once. The option to try it again would be missing. As would your gonads. Feisty lot the folks i work with.

Being a sort of honourary uncle to the wee lassie students sorta puts sexism out the window. After all, in many cases I am older than their father.

And then there's the customers. About 70% of them are women. They've had enough crap without me dishing up more. When your sexual experiences started when you were 4 you tend not to like men much.
